Help! Sorry, feeling a little overwhelmed this week. Final push in school for the Regents exam in Biology, final week in TWT, Senior prom and graduation for my son. Not enough hours in the day. Did a lot of reading this week on virtual labs and interactive games. I have had some experience with virtual labs in school. Each year when we do the frog disection there are a few students who refuse to participate. We have started to offer them the choice of doing a virtual disection. They really love the option and I feel that they get as much or more out of it than my other students. I could see us going to the virtual lab for all of our students.

Wow Steve! Sounds like you definitely have a lot on your plate right now! I feel very overwhelmed myself, but it will all be over soon!! I really like your idea of doing a virtual frog dissection. I think many of the students (the girls especially!) would choose that over doing the actual frog. I remember being in school and having to do that, and we had no choice...We HAD to do it or we would fail! If only we had that technology back then that we do now, I think a lot of us would've enjoyed the process a lot more! I think the virtual dissection will serve as a great learning experience for many students! And P.S.~Try not to stress yourself out...you're almost done!!
ReplyDeleteWow, do you really see the schools going to all virtual diessections? From what you have seen, do you believe that it is the same experience and that students learn the same things? Virtual dissection does make sense if it really works. It would be humane, cost effective, good for public relations, and would eliminate the excuse you mentioned in your post (NOT that it's always an excuse! I know that some students get legitimately ill and bothered by dissection). But then I always picture the doctor who did all virtual labs in medical school operating on me as his or her first "real" patient...they would have to have been some REALLY good virtual labs for me to feel comfortable!
